Lesson #18 Apples to Oranges

Lesson 18: No two babies are alike, even if they're twins!

I'm typing this as Grace is sleeping peacefully in her crib, which she has been in since 7:30pm.  She slept in her bouncy from 5:30-6:45, then woke up hungry and angry about it and took her bottle at 7, then giggled with Daddy, got changed into her pj's, and started to get sleepy in daddy's arms.  Ben put her down drowsy but awake in her crib with her binky and she was out.

I'm typing this as Caleb sleeps on and off in his swing, which he has been in since 8:45pm.  He slept in his bouncy from 5:15-5:45, then proceeded to scream from 5:45-6:15 until Mommy put him in the bjorn facing out.  He then got changed into his pj's and took his bottle at 7.  He fell asleep on the bottle, so Mommy swaddled him, and rocked him as he started to doze off again with his binky.  She placed him in his crib where he fell asleep.  Five minutes later, he started crying so mommy replaced his binky and he fell back asleep.  Forty five minutes later, he started screaming LOUD so Mommy picked him up, brought him out of the room with the other peacefully sleeping baby and held him, rocked him, bounced him, put him in his swing, took him out of his swing, put him in the bouncy, took him out of the bouncy...and finally, thirty minutes later he stopped crying long enough to take a binky and sit in his swing.  He then spent the next thirty minutes dropping his binky, scratching at his face, trying to suck his hand, crying for his binky, then mommy would give it to him, he'd start to doze off, drop his binky and start the whole charade again. He finally fell asleep after dropping his binky for the who-knows-how-many time at 9:15.

I want to blame myself...it's cuz I was the one holding him...but it turns out this little man does the same thing with Daddy, too.

It's amazing that they are siblings with how different the littles are, but no two babies are alike. And just because they're twins, does not mean they don't have their own VERY distinct personalities.

Grace is our explorer.  She's constantly looking around from one side of the house to the other, checking out lights, windows, curtains, fans, the cat, her brother, daddy's voice, mommy's voice, the sounds from the kitchen, laundry room, nursery...you name it, she's curious about it!  She doesn't do a lot of long gazes at either of our faces, but once you catch her eye, she'll give you a huge smile if you smile at her, and sometimes she'll even give you a giggle!  She is very into sitting up and standing up, and she's got incredible leg strength and head control, at least for a little while.  She grabs onto things and loves to hold our fingers while she's eating.  She takes down her bottle in fifteen minutes, tops, and burps immediately afterward without much coaxing.  She only gives us a dirty diaper once or twice a day, and she goes to sleep early and wakes up once over the next twelve hours.  She's learned how to break out of her swaddle and adores her binky during the day. She tries to suck her whole hand unsuccessfully, so she needs that binky to save her.  She talks every now and then at her toys or mommy and daddy, but her voice is sort of soft.  Her cry is also soft and low, but she has the biggest tears every time.

Caleb is our smiler.  He will lock eyes with you and just smile, smile, smile.  All you have to do is look at him and he gets the biggest bashful grin on his face, showing all of his glorious gums.  He'll stare and stare right into our eyes, and he has trouble eating when we smile at him because he can't hold his smile back!  He isn't too interested in his sister, or the cat, or very many toys.  He doesn't put much weight on his legs, but he likes to sit up for a little while...until his head gets too heavy and he can't hold it up anymore.  He grabs with his whole arm and not with his hands, but he hugs our hands as he's eating...if he can focus long enough to sip! He gives us a dirty diaper at almost every feeding, sometimes six or seven every day.  He has a hard time with the nights and cries most of the time for a few hours; he gets too tired and can't fall asleep or stay asleep.  He scratches at his face so he wears mittens a lot of the time, but he's learning to suck his fingers and seems to really like it.  He has a very, very loud cry that never produces tears, but he also has a loud happy voice as he's talking to his toys or his mommy and daddy!
